Why You Might Gain Weight After Intense Workouts

(Even If You’re Getting Stronger)

This weekend wrecked me. In the best way, and also in the what is happening to my body kind of way.

I did a high-level, three-hour derby practice that pushed every limit I had. Then I turned around the next day and ran a full mud run. Weโ€™re talking slick hills, army crawls, water pits, and laughing so hard my ribs hurt. My legs were toast, my face sunburned, and my body? Puffier than a can of biscuits in July heat.

When I stepped on the scale Monday morning, I was almost four pounds heavier than the day before.

But hereโ€™s the thing. I didnโ€™t gain four pounds of fat.
I didnโ€™t backslide.
Iโ€™m not undoing my progress.
And if this sounds familiar to you, neither are you.

This is one of the most common experiences people have after a tough workout. Weight gain after intense exercise is real, but it isnโ€™t what you think.

Why Your Body Holds Onto Weight After a Workout

When you train hard, especially multiple days in a row, your body goes into full repair mode. And that comes with some misunderstood side effects.

Inflammation From Muscle Repair

Intense activity creates tiny tears in your muscle fibers. Thatโ€™s how you get stronger. Your body sends extra fluid and immune cells to repair the damage. The result? Swelling, puffiness, and water retention. Not fat gain.

Glycogen Storage Brings Water With It

After depleting your energy stores, your body works to restock. Glycogen, which is stored carbohydrate, binds to water. For every gram of glycogen, your body holds onto three to four grams of water. So when your muscles refuel, your weight temporarily goes up.

Cortisol Triggers Fluid Retention

Physical stress, even the positive kind, spikes cortisol. That hormone helps with repair but also causes your body to hold onto water, especially in the face and legs.

Lymphatic Slowdown

Your lymph system flushes out waste and excess fluid. After big exertion, it can get overwhelmed. Fluid may pool, leading to puffiness in the face, legs, and hands.

What Iโ€™m Doing to Recover (and What Might Help You Too)

Because this is about care, not panic!

  • Hydration, but make it electrolytes. Water alone isnโ€™t enough. Electrolytes help pull fluid into cells where it belongs and flush the rest.
    • I’m a big fan of LMNT, but I’m also a champagne girl on a beer budget; lately I’ve been loving these electrolyte sticks that I find highly comparable to LMNT for a much lower price point!
  • Movement that doesnโ€™t suck. Iโ€™m walking, stretching, and foam rolling. Nothing heroic. Just keeping things flowing.
  • Sleep. Not always easy, but non-negotiable. Thatโ€™s when the real repair happens.
  • Compression. Iโ€™m not above rocking my derby leggings off-track. They help.
  • Magnesium. It eases soreness, supports muscle repair, and helps release excess fluid.
  • Not cutting food. My body needs fuel right now, not punishment.

This Is What Getting Stronger Looks Like

Weโ€™re so conditioned to fear the scale. To see a few extra pounds and think we failed.

But in reality, this kind of temporary weight gain is a sign that your body is healing. Muscles are repairing. Systems are rebalancing. You are getting stronger, not slipping backward.

Post-workout inflammation and water retention are normal parts of recovery, especially for women lifting heavy, training hard, or pushing limits in sports like derby.

So if youโ€™ve ever felt confused or discouraged by scale fluctuations after a hard weekend, let this be your reminder.

You didnโ€™t gain weight.
You gained progress!

That’s the kind of weight Iโ€™ll carry it proudly.

๐Ÿฅ’ Dill Pickle Lemonade, or, The Homemade Electrolyte Drink That Saved My Summer

Over the weekend at Firehouse Fatales, my friend was slinging her signature dilly lemonade from her state fair-style stand. I tried it on Saturday, and it was everything I didnโ€™t know I needed. Cold, salty, briny, a little sour, and absolutely perfect after standing around in full glam in the middle of 100-degree heat.

It hit the spot. But it also got me thinking. That drink felt so good after hours of sweating and running around. I knew I could take the idea and turn it into something more functional. Something that supported my body as much as it satisfied my taste buds.

So I went home and created a version that works as a homemade electrolyte drink. And Iโ€™ve been drinking it every day since.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Homemade Electrolyte Drink with Pickle Juice and Lemon

Letโ€™s be clear. My friendโ€™s version was simple. Just lemonade and pickle brine. Just that salty, sour bite.

What I made keeps the same flavor foundation but boosts it with ingredients that actually help replace electrolytes and support hydration, especially after long, hot days. This has become my go-to keto-friendly hydration fix.

  • Dill pickle brine provides natural sodium, which is essential when youโ€™re sweating
  • Fresh lemon juice gives you potassium and vitamin C
  • Cream of tartar adds a major boost of potassium and is a little-known electrolyte hero
  • Baking soda offers a small dose of sodium bicarbonate to help your body recover
  • Stevia keeps it sweet without sugar, carbs, or crashes

This version is perfect for anyone following a low carb lifestyle who needs natural electrolyte replacement without the processed powders or sugar-loaded drinks.

๐Ÿงƒ Dill Pickle Lemonade Recipe for Low Carb Summer Hydration

After Firehouse Fatales, this became my daily drink. Itโ€™s briny, bright, and refreshing in a way that makes your whole body feel better. If youโ€™ve been sweating, dragging, or just plain wiped out, this is what I recommend.

Dill Pickle Electrolyte Lemonade

  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice
  • ยฝ cup dill pickle brine
  • ยฝ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • โ…› teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 to 2 cups cold water, depending on your salt preference
  • Stevia to taste
  • Ice to serve

Stir it well and pour it over ice. If you want to dress it up, garnish with a dill sprig or a pickle spear. Or just drink it straight and get on with your day.

โšก๏ธ Who Should Be Drinking This Low Carb Summer Electrolyte Fix

This isnโ€™t just for fun. This is for function. If any of these sound like you, make this your new daily drink.

  • Youโ€™ve been in the sun and feel drained
  • Youโ€™re following keto or low carb and need more than plain water
  • You love pickles and donโ€™t mind a bold flavor
  • You want something natural that actually works
  • Youโ€™re overpaying for electrolyte powders that taste like chalk

This is pickle juice for hydration with purpose. Itโ€™s weird-girl wellness with actual benefits. I made it because I needed it, and Iโ€™m sharing it because I know Iโ€™m not the only one trying to keep it together in the heat.ng. If youโ€™ve been sweating it out or just feel worn down, this might be exactly what you need.

Becoming Sophie Atomic

Why I Stopped Holding Myself Back and Stepped Into Pinup

For as long as I can remember, Iโ€™ve loved the world of pinup and rockabilly. The bold styles, the effortless confidence, the timeless silhouettes. I was drawn to it in a way that felt almost instinctual, like I had known in another life that I belonged there.

But I never let myself truly step into it.

I spent years believing I wasnโ€™t enough. Not pretty enough. Not thin enough. Not the right type of person for it. Somewhere along the way, I absorbed the idea that pinup was for a certain kind of woman, and I wasnโ€™t it.

I donโ€™t know exactly where that belief came from. Maybe it was growing up in a world that constantly tells women they need to fit a mold. Maybe it was the echoes of people making fun of me when I was younger for dressing in the style. Maybe it was an ex-boyfriend, years ago, who went out of his way to make me feel less than; an insecurity that lingered far longer than he ever did.

But hereโ€™s what I do know: I was wrong.

Every woman is worthy. Every woman has value. And the only thing that had ever kept me from stepping into this world was me.

I turned 40 last December and realized that my life was not what I wanted. It was also not what 15-year-old me had dreamed of. That was a gut punch, but it was also a turning point. I decided that if I wanted something different, I had to stop waiting and go after it.

So I did. And the moment I took that first step, the doors flew open.

How It All Started: Saying Yes to Miss Oil City

The first opportunity came unexpectedly.

Boston Betty, who competes in pinup and works as a photographer, reached out to invite my roller derby team to compete in Miss Oil City, a pinup pageant happening on May 24th in Casper, Wyoming. She was waiving the entry fee for the skaters, giving us a chance to step into something completely new.

I freaked out.

For two hours, I spiraled, going back and forth between I want to do this so badly and I canโ€™t, Iโ€™ll make a fool of myself. But then a teammate said six words that changed everything:

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you just go for it?โ€

So I did.

That one choice, the decision to say yes, set off a chain reaction.

From Casper to Arizona: The RockNRoute Rendezvous

After I signed up for Miss Oil City, the universe decided to test just how serious I was about stepping into this new world.

Through the pageant, I was introduced to an incredible woman named Jezebel Jinx, who runs a huge pinup community in Williams, Arizona. She told me she was doing a speed round of applications for RockNRoute Rendezvous, a major pinup competition happening September 13โ€“14, but applications closed the next day.

My stomach dropped.

I wanted to apply. I really wanted to apply. But fear crept in again.

Thankfully, my mom, the absolute rock that she is, pushed me to go for it. And so, I did. Less than 24 hours later, I found out I had been accepted.

In two months, I had gone from doubting whether I even belonged in pinup to competing in two pageants, one of them at a national level.

This wasnโ€™t just something I admired anymore. I was in it.

Finding My Place in the Pinup Community

I expected to feel out of place.

I thought Iโ€™d be the odd one out, the woman fumbling through her first steps in a world full of polished professionals. But what I found instead was one of the most supportive, empowering groups of women Iโ€™ve ever met.

These arenโ€™t just pretty faces posing for photos. These are real women with real lives, real struggles, and real stories. And yet, no matter what they have going on, they show up for each other. They cheer each other on, hype each other up, and make sure no one feels like they donโ€™t belong.

For so long, I had believed that stepping into this world required perfection. It doesnโ€™t. It requires confidence, authenticity, and the courage to take up space.

Yesterday, for the first time, I felt it click.

As the women around me told me I was beautiful, that they were proud of me for taking a chance on myself, something shifted. I wasnโ€™t an outsider looking in.

I belonged here.

Meet Sophie Atomic

With all of this happening, I knew I needed a name that fit the energy of this transformation.

I love all things Cold War era. The Atomic Age, the mid-century aesthetic, the firecracker energy of it all. It felt right. Sophie is cute, pinup-esque, and keeps the โ€œSโ€ theme that still feels like me.

And so, Sophie Atomic was born.

Sophie Atomic isnโ€™t a character. Sheโ€™s me without the fear. Sheโ€™s me at full confidence, at full volume.

The Next Chapter: Miss Oil City, RockNRoute, and My First Magazine Feature

Right now, Iโ€™m in full prep mode. Iโ€™ve spent hours scrolling Pinterest for outfit ideas, practicing hair and makeup, working on my walk, my poses, my presence.

At first, I thought I had to play it safe. Lean into classic or kitschy pinup because thatโ€™s what felt โ€œacceptable.โ€ But the more I grow into this, the more I realize that playing it safe isnโ€™t me.

Iโ€™m not just pinup. Iโ€™m rockabilly. Iโ€™m psychobilly. Iโ€™m a little louder, a little edgier, a little rougher around the edges. And thatโ€™s exactly the kind of energy Iโ€™m bringing to these competitions.

Beyond the pageants, Iโ€™m also planning my first magazine feature in Rods Nโ€™ Rebels. Jezebel Jinx, who runs the magazine, has welcomed me into her La’Rouge Rebelz troupe and invited me to submit photos whenever Iโ€™m ready. She told me she has every faith Iโ€™ll fit right in.

That moment, standing there realizing a pinup magazine will be publishing my photos, was surreal.

If Youโ€™re Waiting for the Right Time, Stop Waiting

If Iโ€™ve learned anything through this journey, itโ€™s this: you donโ€™t need permission to chase the life you want.

I used to think I wasnโ€™t enough. But the truth is, it doesnโ€™t matter what size you are, what you look like, or how much experience you have. You are worthy. You have value.

And if thereโ€™s something calling to you, something youโ€™ve always wanted to do but fear has held you back, this is your sign to go for it.

I spent years standing on the sidelines. That ends now.

Unboxing My Virta Health Package: Tools for Success on My Keto Journey

My newest video is up, and itโ€™s all about the exciting unboxing of my Virta Health package! If youโ€™ve been following my weight loss journey here, or on LevelUpSaho, you know Iโ€™ve been living that keto life for a while. So when my insurance company sent me a letter saying I qualified to use the Virta Health program for free, I was intrigued. Free keto help? Absolutely. Plus, I wanted to check it out to see if itโ€™s worth sharing with you all, so others can give it a shot and be successful with it, too.

The package I received from Virta is packed with tools to make tracking and staying on top of my keto game easier than ever. Inside, I found a meter that tests both ketones and blood glucose (all in oneโ€”so convenient!) and all the necessary supplies, a digital scale that syncs to my phone, a food scale, magnesium supplements, bouillon cubes, a sample pack of LMNT (you know how much I love that stuff), a recipe book, and a cool tote bag to carry it all in. This kit alone has me feeling like Iโ€™m stepping into the next level of keto success.

Setting it all up? Well, letโ€™s just say there was a slight learning curve at first. Trying to figure out the meter and syncing the scales had me feeling like I was operating a small spaceship. But once I got everything working, it was smooth sailing; and now Iโ€™m officially all set to track both my ketones and glucose like a pro, which is going to help me fine-tune my keto plan even more.

One of the biggest tips Iโ€™ve found helpful in this processโ€”is the importance of discipline over motivation. Youโ€™ve heard me say this before, but itโ€™s still so true: motivation is great, but discipline is what gets you through those tough days. By sticking to my macros and eating almost the same meals every day, Iโ€™ve found a rhythm that works for me. I know exactly what to eat and when, and that predictability takes away a lot of the guesswork (and temptation).

Another key to my success? Being prepared. Before I started with Virta, even though I was taking phentermine to help with my hunger, Iโ€™d still get hit with that classic 3:30 PM snack attackโ€”and let me tell you, it didnโ€™t always end with good decisions. But now, thanks to the tools and guidance from Virta, Iโ€™m staying ahead of those cravings. By planning my meals, packing my snacks, and making sure Iโ€™ve got everything I need for the day, I can breeze through the afternoon without reaching for something Iโ€™ll regret later.

As for whatโ€™s next? Well, this unboxing is just the start. Iโ€™m excited to see how using these tools continues to help me stay on track and push my results even further. Iโ€™ll be sharing more updates as I go, and if youโ€™re curious about how to set yourself up for success on ketoโ€”or just want to watch me figure out how to use all this new gearโ€”be sure to check out the video. Thereโ€™s something in here for everyone, whether youโ€™re new to keto or just looking to refine your routine.

Embracing the Power of Saying “No”

In our quest for a balanced and fulfilling life, one of the most empowering skills we can cultivate is the ability to say “no.” As I prepare to share a detailed video about my goals on my YouTube channel, Level Up Saho, I want to emphasize the importance of protecting those goals by confidently using the word “no” when necessary. Remember, “No.” is a complete sentence, and it is a vital tool in our journey toward self-improvement and alignment with our true aspirations.

Why Saying “No” Matters

Saying “no” is not about being negative or uncooperative. Itโ€™s about setting boundaries and prioritizing what truly matters to us. When we commit to our goals, whether they pertain to small-scale homesteading, weight loss, or any other life changes, we need to guard our time, energy, and focus. Every “yes” we give to something that doesnโ€™t serve our purpose is a “no” to something that does.

The Challenge of Saying “No”

For many of us, saying “no” can be challenging. We fear disappointing others, missing out on opportunities, or being perceived as selfish. However, the real challenge lies in realizing that our time and resources are limited, and spreading ourselves too thin can dilute our efforts and derail our progress.

The Power of a Simple “No”

Itโ€™s essential to understand that “No.” is a complete sentence. It doesnโ€™t require justification, explanation, or apology. This simple, yet powerful word helps us maintain our boundaries and stay true to our goals. By confidently saying “no,” we honor our commitments and ensure that our actions are aligned with our intentions.

Practical Tips for Saying “No”

  1. Be Clear About Your Goals: Knowing what you want to achieve makes it easier to recognize when a request or opportunity doesnโ€™t align with your objectives. When youโ€™re clear about your priorities, saying “no” becomes a natural response to anything that could distract you from your path.
  2. Practice Assertiveness: Assertiveness is the ability to express your needs and boundaries clearly and respectfully. Practice saying “no” in a firm, polite, and direct manner. Remember, you are not obligated to explain your reasons unless you choose to.
  3. Use “No” as a Shield: View “no” as a protective shield that guards your time, energy, and focus. Each time you use it, you are reinforcing your commitment to your goals and values.
  4. Be Prepared for Reactions: Not everyone will understand or appreciate your boundaries, and thatโ€™s okay. Stand firm in your decision and remember that your primary responsibility is to yourself and your goals.
  5. Reframe Your Perspective: Instead of viewing “no” as a rejection, see it as an affirmation of your priorities. Saying “no” to one thing often means saying “yes” to something more important.

Saying “no” is a vital skill for anyone committed to personal growth and goal achievement. It empowers us to protect our time and energy, ensuring that our actions align with our aspirations. As I prepare to share more about my goals in an upcoming video on Level Up Saho, I encourage you to embrace the power of “no” and use it confidently as a tool for staying true to your path.

Stay tuned for my upcoming video where I’ll dive deeper into my goals and share more insights on how to align your life with your true passions and purpose.

Remember, “No.” is a complete sentence. Use it wisely and watch how it transforms your journey.

Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences on this topic in the comments below. How have you learned to say “no” and what impact has it had on your life? Let’s support each other in our quest for a more aligned and fulfilling life!

Stay Level Up,
